01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Set along the remaining row-house streets of Kyojima, Sumida Ward, halahelu operates out of a thoughtfully renovated traditional machiya. Serving as a warm gathering point for the local community, it offers a peaceful place to take a breather during the day.

The kitchen's main culinary draw is lu rou fan (braised minced pork rice). Diners can opt for a complete meal set served with pickles, small side dishes, and a daily changing soup, or keep things quick with an à la carte bowl. A popular addition is the ludan, a soy-based braised egg simmered with Taiwanese spices that pairs seamlessly with the rice.

The beverage lineup also leans into Taiwanese favorites. Guests can toast over Taiwanese beer or a highball, or choose fruit-driven soft drinks like mango and guava juices, as well as HeySong Sarsaparilla (Heisong Shashi) with its distinctive, herbal fizz.

Beyond food, it functions comfortably as a cafe for a pour-over coffee, flat white, or long black. With kendama enthusiasts occasionally dropping by to play, the space blends down-to-earth Tokyo shitamachi warmth with relaxed everyday hospitality.
